Abstract:
A mass of free moving trout can be determined by using a digital
camera, a computer and special digital processing software (Troutedge).
The aim of this research is to calculate the mass of a trout with the
application of effective two dimensional image analyses on the length of
the trout. The problem is that the trout must first be caught in order to
be weighed and is difficult as well as a time wasting process. This is
why an alternative method is necessary.
If the trout farmer applies the proposed data for indicating the
growth of the fish, he can group fish of the same mass together. A
further benefit to the trout farmer is that the life expectancy can be
determined, and disease can be controlled
This study can be of tremendous help with important management and
marketing decisions. Various methods and techniques were researched
to calculate a trout's mass by using its length.
The problem can be solved by the application of the following steps:
a) A digital camera must be used to take valid images of photos of
the fish.
b) Two-dimensional images are divided into segments, for example
images of the periphery of the photos.
c) Digital signal processing techniques will be used to analyze the
images.
Information was gathered by means of a literature study, personal
interviews and experimental research. The literature study includes
relevant, selected sources on digital image processing and the
importance of applying two-dimensional image processing.
